"Nakhodka" by Victor Dement touched the audience at the Honfleur Film Festival

The debut film by director Victor Dement "Nakhodka" this year was in the competition program of the 23rd festival of Russian cinema in the French Honfleur. This kinopritcha - adaptation of the novel of 1965, Vladimir Tendryakova. Victor Dement in an interview with RFI explained why he loves it when the audience cry, and why the "discovery" is worth seeing all those who are tired of films with bad end.
RFI: This is your first film. Why did you choose such a complex story? The complex in content, so in technical terms - for the shooting? 

Victor Dement: The material itself is very interesting and, in my opinion, very consistent times. We are now not so easy, when negative emotions start basest overwhelming. This story is almost biblical. It's about forgiveness and understanding. In today's world it is very important and you need to go back to it. In these stories the potential for many, many years, as well as all that is fundamentally biblical. Unfortunately, while the person is alive, he always will be a problem of choosing between good and evil. And technically ... and just shoot? You can get into the scenery in the four walls, but it's not interesting. Debutants and choose the difficult things sometimes do not understand the difficulties that they face. I was lucky, I was surrounded by very good people, friends: director of photography Andrew Naidenov, leading actor Alexei Guskov, Nadezhda Markina (who plays Nura, wife Trofim Rusanov, - RFI). He was all in fun: the cold, and forwarding.

Tell the conditions in which the shooting took place?

In the story, everything happens really there, where the writer was born. It Vologda region. There really is impenetrable forests. But the look of them, unfortunately, are very nice and friendly. It is only when you get there, you realize that perhaps should be held with a machete. We filmed in Karelia. This Russian North. We chose it because it is visually very interesting. It is the shore of the largest lake in Europe, the relic - Onega. Since one of the leitmotifs of history - man's place in nature and nature in the film plays an important role, we have chosen, perhaps, the most interesting from this point of view of the place. The only problem was that we were wrong on terms with the snow. Therefore, we were forced to dosnyat a small piece of history of forest in Finland, Koli reserve - there is an unforgettable beauty, it was difficult to shoot, I just look around.

Have you noticed that the story "Nakhodka" - something timeless. Although it is written in the 65 th year in a certain historical period, to thaw. Tendriakov - is one of the authors who did not fit into the '60s. Then the literature on the so-called shared townspeople and villagers. But he was more interested in issues by the moral order. And especially in the second half of the 60s-70s, when his lyrics began to fall under censorship. Not only that Tendriakov asks these moral issues, he is also responsible for them. You see in this some kind of naivety?

Tendriakov philosopher is more than just a writer. All this is disguised as a village prose, redneck, as it is called. All the characters are absolutely biblical. "Discovery" could be removed at any other place. Within the meaning it would be the same. I think Tendryakova history - a history of all the many Russian artists and philosophers of the patriots of their country, who have tried to understand: what is the actual problem is, what is a way out of this situation. But because they are creative people, they did this by searching moral rather than political or economic any steps.

Tendriakov believed in honest Communists, and that the Soviet Union could be transformed, abandoning Stalinist past. Just after the "discovery" in the 66th year, he signed the famous letter of culture and science against the rehabilitation of Stalin. And in the end he comes to the Christian, biblical values ​​that have long been "dropped from the ship of modernity."

Yes, definitely. But it's a definite pattern. It coincides with the so-called thaw in the Soviet Union, when people feel that they can say something new, something interesting. He has an amazing story "Three, seven, ace," in which he gives a definition of what was happening to his homeland. As it seems, this is a pristine, community, naive world. And all that comes from outside, only corrupts and kills Russian. By the way, today demanded pretty idea. I think Hunt Tendryakova very correct. This craze 60s still in some kind of moral exploration, in search of moral exit the search hero. I think it is still less than the Soviet, but that's all there was to be. And an (against the rehabilitation of Stalinism - RFI), and his belief that it is possible to transform (the country - RFI), and so on. Just Tendriakov was opposed, as I understand it, any violence. His novels (and he has war stories) say that he was afraid of a repetition of revolutions, coups. He wanted peace and sought enlightenment. In Russian history, there is an amazing figure - Catherine II. I once honored her correspondence with Voltaire. Voltaire wondered how much Ekaterina pay attention to literature, art and available to the common man. She wrote to him that it was a matter of policy, because Russia needs a "softening of manners." I think now everything is the same.

You would think that the audience watching your movie, go to the softening of manners? Or vice versa - with aching, bruised feeling?

I think that the picture gives us hope that man is capable of variable even on the decline of life. To understand what was right and what is wrong. Find a meaning of its existence, even the justification of its existence. Come to peace, inner peace with himself. It is bright and peaceful history. She is beautiful and her inner beauty (do not like that word) positive. Probably because we are tired of stories that end badly.

At the festival in Honfleur you waiting for what will be the reaction of the jury or, rather, the audience reaction?

The reaction of the jury, I never expect. I do not believe that "Nakhodka" in the full sense of the word festival cinema. This movie viewers. And not because it happened. It was originally my setup. I wanted to understand whether today viewer view adaptation of classical works. The jury - is, of course, is also interesting. This high-class professionals. I wonder how they are here appreciate our classic old style Kinoroman, this tale, which we, of course, the most modernized. I wonder how this genre can, in principle, to excite them. Still spectator reaction - first and foremost.

How did French audience react?

In my opinion, good. They came, thanks for the picture. It is obvious that they liked the movie, excited. I've seen people with wet eyes. I love it when a cry. That's the attraction of the soul.


Absolutely. And what to watch, if you nobody empathize. Sometimes nice, smart. But if you do not touch it ... I think a lot of movies too - cold and empty, but incredibly correct, perfectly made, sustained form. And when a person comes out, I see: opa, wet eyes. So - I got. Hooray. So no wonder.

Tell us, what are your plans? You will stay in the genre cinema parable?

My plans, as well as plans of all Russian producers, linked to a large extent with what is going through my homeland. Cinema in Russia is not easy to shoot. Although the government really wants to help us. If we can pass this band of hard crisis and launches go, I hope to return for another classic story. This will again be the film adaptation - based on the works of Maxim Gorkiy, just before the actual laughter.

Is Gorkiy relevant?

Of course. Especially his trilogy "Zykov," "Egor Bulychev," "achieve and others", written at the turn - from 1913 th to 1918-th years. They are very relevant. It's not even about the Russian business. It is a timeless story attempts to modernize from above and how it ends. What I see often just gets in the replica. You can program "Time", these cues to run - will be one to one. People, unfortunately, not always change. Hard it happens. A bitter in this sense is very impartial witness.
